Knowledge Framework: Arts

IB TOK Knowledge Framework of Arts

The arts are all about conveying a message in a unique and more attractive form. The subject matter the art is trying to convey is different in every piece of art. However all of them share a common goal which is to convey the artist’s message to the observer of the art. The artist might use different ways to convey his/her message and nothing is excluded in an art piece unless it is a hidden message in which you have to analyze the art piece and background to completely understand it.

Since art is an expression that is communicated in a visual form, language might affect what is expressed in the art. For example in music, language will affect the specific words chosen and selected to be placed in the lyrics of a song. The specific word choice might give a different kind of atmosphere to a song rather than choosing a word that might not be as detailed as the chosen word.

The arts consists of various branches of creative activities, such as painting, sculptures literature, dance, music, and others. Since the arts consists of various branches, all of the ways of knowing is used in one way or another. For example, all eight of the ways of knowing might apply to music. Language applies to the language that is used in the song lyrics. Sense perception applies to the musical composition that is heard through the ear. Emotion applies to the listener’s feelings and the emotion that the music is conveying (sad song creates a sad atmosphere). Reason might be used inside a musical composition to back up why it was created. Imagination applies to the listener’s view on how the music feels to him/her and how he/she personally sees the message conveyed. Faith mostly applies to religious music. Intuition applies to the listener and how the listener decodes the message trying to be conveyed by the artist. Memory is applied to the listener and the artist where the listener might remember something because of listening to the music and the artist where the artist is trying to create an art from his/her memory. The arts are more characterized by the methods held in common in which the art creates something accessible to the senses and communicate. In diversity there is a commonality in which it also communicates to the audience.

Historical Development

The arts of today uses the arts of the past by following an example given in the past. The arts these days are still following a format in which a painting is usually created in a canvas. Also for music, it follows the same old formula in which the ends of each line usually ends with a rhyme. Technological factors have given particular directions to the development of the arts by creating a new art form such as digital art. Digital art spawned more branches of art such as digital painting, movie making, airbrushing, and more. Technology also helped getting art to spread out faster and to a wider audience.

Links to Personal Knowledge

The shared knowledge of the arts shared to the individuals will help them gain more information about artworks. It may also help individuals see an art work in a different point of view that they never saw it from and gain new knowledge by doing it. An individual may contribute to the field itself by creating an artwork and sharing it to the world. Another way is that an individual might become an art critic or analyzer and help analyizing artworks. The arts affect my own knowledge by helping me realize that an art might have been inspired because of an interesting historical background and also helped me view different arts in different points of views
