Good News is No News

By:James Adhitthana

When is the last time you heard of good news and celebrations being broadcasted on television news channels? It seems that the media tend to talk about the current bad news like terrorist attacks or murder compared to rejoicing positive news. Joss Whedon from The Astonishing X-Men sums this idea up clearly with the quote “The news isn’t there to tell you what happened. It’s there to tell you what it wants you to hear or what it thinks you want to hear”. Therefore for media institutions good news is no news because bad news spreads like wildfires. No one wants to listen about a girl from a small city winning a competition, instead people want to hear about terrorism or discrimination. Humans are wired to seek out news of dramatic, negative events because we care about the threat of bad things than we do about the prospect of good things. Agenda setting is what the media is essentially doing. From countless potential news candidates to broadcast, media institutions hand picks the topics to broadcast that will cater our current needs instead. This means that the institutions get to set up what is currently the hot topic or news.
